Collection: Submersible pumps with a high head

Head is the height difference plus the resistance of the pipe, and the second part is often forgotten. Here are the pumps that handle 20 metres or more, for deep wells, tall buildings and long rising pipes.

When the water has to go a long way up

The head is the height difference the pump has to bridge, plus the resistance of the pipe. That second part is often forgotten: a long or thin discharge line can easily add a few metres of "virtual height". This collection holds the pumps that can manage 20 metres or more.

How to work it out

  • Static height: the difference between the water level and the point where the water comes out.
  • Pipe loss: the longer and thinner the pipe, the more resistance. At twice the flow, the resistance roughly quadruples.
  • Required pressure at the outlet: 1 bar corresponds to roughly 10 metres of head.

Add those three together and look for a pump whose curve runs comfortably above that. The head calculator will help you. If it concerns water from a deep well, see the borehole pumps.
