What an agitator does

Sand and sludge settle on the bottom. An ordinary pump sucks itself stuck there: the suction strainer blocks, the pump runs dry and destroys its own wearing parts. An agitator — a stirrer under the pump — keeps the sediment moving, so it goes up with the water instead of blocking the inlet.

Where it helps

• Excavations and trenches where the water carries sand.
• Sumps and basins with sludge on the bottom.
• Any situation where you leave the pump running unattended in murky water for longer periods.

Do bear in mind that an agitator deliberately makes the water murky: the pump has to be able to cope with those particles. So also look at the material of the impeller and at the free passage. For dewatering on a building site you will find the wider range under construction pumps.
