A cutter makes a thin discharge pipe possible

A lifting station with a cutting mechanism grinds solids and toilet paper down before they enter the pump. As a result the discharge pipe can be much thinner than with an installation that has to pass everything whole — often the difference between being able to install it in an existing building or not.

When to choose this

• A toilet, shower or kitchen below sewer level, where there is no room for a thick pipe.
• A long discharge line where you want to keep the resistance low.
• A renovation where the pipe has to pass through existing openings.

What to look at

• Maintenance. A cutting blade wears. Ask about the replacement parts before you choose.
• What may go in. Wet wipes and sanitary towels do not belong in a cutter installation either; they remain the most common cause of faults.
• Reliability. In a home with one toilet, a fault is an immediate problem. Consider a twin-pump version and a high water alarm.
