Motor protection for pumps without a plug

A 400 V pump is often supplied with a free cable end: the protection is up to you. That is not a formality. Without the prescribed protection the motor burns out on a blockage or a lost phase, and the warranty will not cover the damage.

What to look for

  • The pump's rated current. It is on the rating plate. The protection needs a setting range with that value in the middle of it, and you set it to the pump — not to the fuse of the circuit.
  • Plug or panel. A motor protection plug combines switch and protection in one CEE plug: quick, mobile, no installation work. Choose a control panel for a fixed installation, two pumps or a level control.
  • Phase sequence. A three-phase pump running the wrong way round delivers hardly any flow and eventually fails. Versions with phase-sequence monitoring or a phase inverter take that problem away.
  • Protection rating and siting. The panel belongs in a dry, ventilated space. If it has to go outdoors, mind the IP rating and direct sunlight.
  • Wiring. This is work for an electrician. Have the connection and the setting recorded, so you know where you stand if there is a fault.
