Lifting stations

Buying a sewage lifting station is necessary when wastewater is produced below sewer level: a toilet in the basement, a washing machine in the cellar or a bathroom on a houseboat. The unit collects the water in a tank and pumps it up to the sewer. If toilet water passes through it, you need a unit suitable for faeces, optionally with a cutter for a narrow pressure pipe. Also consider the buffer volume, a flood-proof version, and single or twin pumps if failure is not an option. For outdoor use there are underground pump pits, and a high-water alarm warns you before damage occurs. We stock lifting stations from HOMA and Pentair Jung Pumpen.

Which lifting station suits your situation?

A lifting station discharges wastewater that is produced below sewer level: a toilet in the basement, a washing machine in the cellar, a bathroom on a houseboat. The first question is always whether sewage passes through the station, because that determines which standard applies.

What to look for

  • With or without sewage. For a toilet, EN 12050-1 applies; for grey water only (wash basin, washing machine, shower) a lighter station is enough. Never choose a grey water station for a toilet.
  • Cutting system or vortex. A cutting system shreds solids so they pass through a thin pressure pipe — useful when the sewer is far away or the ground rises. Note that cutter pumps need back pressure. If the pressure pipe is short and wide, a vortex impeller is more reliable.
  • Tank volume. The more tapping points and the greater the peak load, the larger the tank. For a single toilet, compact is enough; for a whole household or a business, go bigger.
  • Submersible. If the station stands in a room that can flood, choose a submersible version. The control unit does have to go in a dry, well-ventilated room.
  • Single or twin pump. Two pumps that alternate wear evenly and take over from each other on failure. For a hotel, a business or a shared line that is not a luxury but operational reliability.

If the station has to go underground outside, see the pump sumps. For wastewater without a toilet you can also look at the grey water pumps or the sewage pumps. Not sure? Use the pump selector or call +31 85 210 08 97.
