Before the rain: prepare yourself
- Prepare an emergency kit in a fixed, dry, and accessible place, not in the basement itself.
- Know where the water can drain: a pit, a street drain, or a rainwater drain that doesn't flow back. Make sure the hose is long enough.
- Check gutters, drains, and light shafts for leaves and debris, especially in autumn.
- Place valuables higher up in the basement, cellar, or garage.
- Test the pump annually: run it in a bucket of water for a short time.
During flooding: checklist
- Safety: switch off the power in areas where water comes into contact with sockets or appliances.
- Place the pump: put the pump in its carrying basket at the lowest point.
- Connect the hose: connect the hose and lay it to a drainage point that does not flow back.
- Power: use a socket outside the wet area and keep the plug dry.
- Pumping: let the pump run. With a float, it switches itself off; without a float, stay with it.
- Document: take photos and videos for your insurer.
After the flood
Remove the last few centimeters with a flat suction pump, ventilate well, and let wet floors and walls dry to prevent mold. After use, rinse the pump with clean water, let it dry, and put the complete kit back. If the water came from the sewer, clean the area extra thoroughly and consider installing a backflow preventer.
