Crawl space full of water: causes and the right pump

Quick answer: water in the crawl space is usually caused by high groundwater, a leaking pipe, or rainwater flowing along the foundation. Pump it out with a flat suction pump that drains down to about 2 mm. If the water keeps returning, leave an automatic flat suction pump with a sensor permanently in place.

Why a flat suction pump?

A crawl space is low and the floor is often uneven. A regular submersible pump leaves several centimeters of water behind, which continues to cause dampness and mold. A flat-suction submersible pump drains from the bottom down to about 2 mm. It is flat enough to fit through the crawl hatch.

One-time pumping or automatic dry-keeping?

One-time, for example after a leak: use a manual flat suction pump. Place the pump at the lowest point, run the hose outside, and stay nearby until the water is gone.

Recurring water, for example due to groundwater: leave an automatic pump running permanently. In a crawl space, a regular float switch often doesn't fit because it needs space to move up and down. How to install the pump

  1. Find the lowest point. If necessary, dig a small pit or place a tile so the pump stands stably.
  2. Route the hose through a ventilation grille or conduit to the outside, into a pit or the rainwater sewer. Do not let the water flow back into the crawl space directly along the facade.
  3. Use an outlet outside the crawl space, or a splash-proof connection.
  4. Test the automatic switch and check the pump a few times a year.

If the crawl space is dry, ensure good ventilation and consider floor sealing (e.g., shells or foil) to reduce moisture in the house.
