From the pump to the pipe

Between the pump or lifting station and the sewer there is a piece of work that is rarely in the box: the transition to the rising pipe, the passage through the wall, the venting of the line. This is the material you make that connection with properly — tight, demountable and without strain on the connection.

What to look for

  • Size and material of the existing pipe. Measure the outside diameter and establish what it is: PVC, cast iron or steel. The transition piece follows from that.
  • Flexible or rigid. A flexible transition piece or a sleeve absorbs settlement and vibration. A rigid connection on a lifting station builds up strain and eventually leaks.
  • Demountable. Make sure the joint can be undone without sawing. At service time you want to lift the pump or the unit out, not demolish the pipe.
  • Wall penetration. Where the line passes through a cellar wall, it needs a wall collar or a watertight penetration — not a hole with sealant.
  • Venting. A pipe vent prevents the underpressure that siphons a trap dry and lets sewer smell into the building.

For the valve and the shut-off in the rising pipe, see the shut-off and check valves; for hose connections, the couplings. Unsure which transition piece you need? Send a photo of the connection via contact or call 085 - 210 08 97.
